Tragedy Strikes Lewiston, Maine: Mass Shooting Claims 22 Lives

In a heartbreaking turn of events, Lewiston, Maine, is grappling with a horrifying mass shooting incident that unfolded Wednesday night, leaving a trail of devastation in its wake.

Maine law enforcement agencies sprung into action as reports of an active shooter flooded in. Residents were urged to remain indoors and avoid the streets while authorities launched an extensive search for the suspect or suspects behind this gruesome attack.

Lewiston police, in a chilling revelation, confirmed that the incident had claimed at least 22 lives. Lt. Derrick St. Laurent of the Lewiston Police Department disclosed that the shootings occurred at Sparetime Recreation and Schemengees, resulting in multiple injuries.

Shannon Moss, spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety, issued a shelter-in-place directive. Residents were instructed to secure their doors and remain vigilant as officials combed through two crime scenes. Moss emphasized the importance of reporting any suspicious activities or individuals by dialing 911.

A photo of a suspect, potentially armed, was circulated by the Androscoggin County Sheriff's Office. This fugitive is believed to be connected to shootings on Goddard Road, Mollison Way, and the 500 block of Lincoln Street.

In their pursuit of the assailant, Lewiston police also released an image of a vehicle they are actively searching for. They urged the public to assist by contacting them at 513-3001 ext. 3327 if they recognize the vehicle. Notably, the front bumper may have been painted black.

Lewiston authorities have advised residents to steer clear of the affected area until an official all-clear signal is issued. They further stressed the importance of adhering to instructions provided by local officials, including the ongoing shelter-in-place order.

The situation garnered the attention of federal agencies, with the Boston branch of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives promptly responding to the active shooter event.

Lewiston Mayor Carl Sheline expressed his sorrow over the unfolding crisis. He underlined the significance of safeguarding one's well-being and respecting the shelter-in-place instructions, emphasizing the strength and resilience of the Lewiston community during this trying period.

News of the incident reached the highest echelons of government, with President Joe Biden being briefed on the situation. Additionally, Senator Angus King, I-Maine, extended his heartfelt condolences to the city's residents, pledging his commitment to supporting local authorities and rushing back to Maine as soon as possible.

Governor Janet Mills issued a statement at 8:30 p.m., conveying her deep concern and sorrow for the victims and their families. The entire state of Maine stands united in grief, resolute in its support for the community of Lewiston during this agonizing time.
