Toyota and Yamaha are developing a V8 engine that runs on hydrogen.

(TWN)-Toyota and Yamaha are developing a V8 engine that runs on hydrogen.

Yamaha Motor's president said his business was devoted to the diesel engine, but Toyota contracted with Yamaha to build a hydrogen-fueled engine.

The 5.0-liter V8 engine would be built for automobiles and would be based on the one used by the Lexus RC F coupe, with modifications made to its cylinder heads and injectors, among other things, according to a statement released by Yamaha around the end of last week.

Yamaha claims that the machine can produce up to 450 horsepower at 6,800 revolutions per minute. The company claimed it had been developing a hydrogen engine for cars for about five years.

Yoshihiro Hidaka, president of Yamaha Motor, stated that despite the company's goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2050, it still has "a strong passion for and level of commitment to the internal combustion engine."

"Hydrogen engines house the potential to be carbon-neutral while keeping our passion for the internal combustion engine alive at the same time," Hidaka said.

The declaration made last week adds to one made in November 2021, when Yamaha Motor, Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Toyota, Subaru, and Mazda revealed information about a "challenge to expand fuel options for using internal combustion engines." The public first saw the V8 engine created for Toyota at this announcement.
